An overview of enemies and power ups in Qake.
Qake is our retro arcade game for iOS. The goal of the game is to reach as high a level as possible, whereby the player has to secure a certain percentage of the court in every level. On this mission the player faces diverse enemies which must hit neither the token, nor the unsecured path. Besides enemy balls and bombs, the game features power ups, which make life easier for the player.
We would like to use this blop posting to introduce the different enemies and power ups in Qake.
Enemies - Balls and bombs
Enemy entities comprise balls, which move around freely, as well as bombs, which appear at arbitrary positions. As mentioned above, neither the token nor the player path must be hit by balls and bombs. However, enemies can be eliminated by enclosing them within the player's path.
In every level, the player faces a different configuration of balls, where the number of balls increases continually. The respective configuration of balls is based on the concept of supply. See our blog post Controlled Chaos: Randomization in Level Design for more information on this concept.
There are the following ball types in Qake:
Starting from level 10, the Satellite Ball may appear in the game. This ball is orbited by two smaller balls, which can lead to unpredictable direction changes when bouncing off the border. In contrast to all other ball types, the Satellite Ball cannot be removed entirely from the game. On elimination, both satellites will appear in the unsecured area of the court.

Bombs appear at arbitrary positions at randomized intervals and will cost the player a life on impact. Qake features the following bomb types:
In contrast to balls and bombs, power ups support the player on her mission. They may appear at arbitrary positions within the court at random points in time. Power ups can be activated either by passing through them or by enclosing them within the player's path.
The following list outlines the different power ups in Qake.
